The outlines colours depend on what tool/layer you have selected. If you don't have any tool/layer opened, purple means that you have selected a title and information about this title is shown on the left hand side bar. If you have a tool/layer open, you can check what each outline colour mean on the legend at the bottom right side of your map view.
